Espelette pepper (Piment d'Espelette in French and Ezpeletako piperra in Basque) is the name given to a variety of pepper grown in the French Basque Country.
It receives its name from the commune of Espelette (Pyrénées-Atlantiques). And although its cultivation extends to other borderlands, it is the latter that enjoys more prominence, both because of the folkloric aspect conferred by the thousands of strings of peppers that dry on facades and balconies starting in September and for its annual festival of pepper (1st weekend of October) that brings together about 20,000 people (more than 10 times the usual size of the town).
